Museums are not only centers of art education but also centres of learning the history and culture of humankind. By collecting and displaying objects of artistic significance they provide us with a meaningful insight into the past or into our modern society.
But what has to do a museum with inspiration?
It’s interesting the origin of the word museum, because it comes from the Greek mouseion, which meant “seat of the Muses”. In the ancient Greek world the 9 muses were considered the inspirational goddesses of literature, arts and science. And today a muse is a source of artistic inspiration.
That’s why the word Museum is so fitting: artists have always found some kind of inspiration from the works of other artists (only inspiration, not a copyright infringement, though!)
For example, an antique map at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy inspired the theme of my FISH AND SHIPS. Also my DOG AT THE GALLERY (which won a gift certificate for tying 1st Place in the FAA Edit This 67 Contest) was inspired by a visit to the Uffizi.
Instead, the mosaic artwork in my latest upload A COLORFUL TREE IN 3D was inspired by the wonderful mosaic art found in Ravenna, Italy.
