ParticipantMany artists have embraced AI and the ability to enhance images or create entirely new ones from just a textual description. The many available AI tools differ in their “creative” abilities. I find it amusing that often faces are very well detailed and accurate, but when it comes to hands, AI seems to have rather limited abilities. Often the number of fingers is unrealistic, and the shapes are deformed.
One of the tools I use often ignores parts of my text. Recently I asked for a boy on a sled as part of a longer input text. The generator in a half dozen tries never managed to put a boy on a sled. Is that because the learning set did not include such images? I settled for a boy on a pile of snow in my “Snowy Street” creation.
Like so many other tools and media, artists will try them. At first the resulting works are more like talking dogs – not praised for eloquence but admired for the modest accomplishments.

Participant“Is that because the learning set did not include such images? ” Good question! I would have thought that the learning set would have images of sleds and boys individually and “smart AI” would have been able to put the two single elements together itself!

ParticipantWell, I went back and tried again. This is what I asked for: “Boy on a sled being pulled by another boy. They are in the middle of the street. There is snow all around. The location is a modern urban area with tall buildings. There are shops with brightly light windows.” Here is what I got.

ParticipantOh my gosh, so true! The hands are always so…um…odd. A ‘photograph’ is doing the rounds on Facebook right now…a really cute image of two little ones with some baby animal or other. I thought it looked very clean… very perfect… Until i saw the little hands. 6 fingers?
But that was the other thing. It was TOO clean. TO perfect. Even photographs have reality, but ai has too much of it.
I am ND and i know perfectly well what i mean but it’s hard to convey that here.

ParticipantI just wanted to add that i am not like most people, in that i actually have great respect for people who use ai to get amazing images. Like yourself, Ludwig, I’ve tried several times and failed to get what i asked for. In my case, at all. I now just use my own photographs and play with them. However, even doing that I’m having to alter things my way in a photo editor. I’m not going to be an ai baby lol

ParticipantMany artists in the past had helpers and apprentices to do some of the details. I think of AI as an assistant. It seems like it will be a while before that assistant will be able to carry out assignment as expected. Until then we just have to do the art ourselves.
Counting fingers may be something AI can’t be trusted with any time soon.
Like you, Abbie, I will be doing my photography and photo-manipulations myself.
