Poet Gboyega OdubanjoDear friends and art enthusiasts,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Gboyega Odubanjo, a talented poet whose words touched the hearts of many. Gboyega, aged 27, went missing during the Shambala Festival in rural Northamptonshire and tragically, a body was discovered shortly thereafter.

Hailing from Bromley, south London, Gboyega Odubanjo was more than a poet; he was a cherished son, a devoted brother, and a true friend. His presence illuminated the lives of those around him, leaving an indelible mark on the creative community.

While we mourn the loss of a promising artist, we also celebrate the light he brought into our lives. The news of his passing has united us in grief, but also in determination. Gboyega’s family has initiated the Gboyega Odubanjo Foundation, which will empower low-income black writers to share their stories and perspectives with the world. Already, their efforts have inspired a generous outpouring of support, with over £40,000 raised for the cause.

The Foundation stands as a testament to Gboyega’s enduring legacy. Through it, his spirit will continue to shine brightly, igniting the passion and creativity of future generations. As we come together to remember him, let us also honour his memory by nurturing the voices of those who may otherwise go unheard.

In the realm of literature, Mr. Gboyega Odubanjo was a luminary whose impact extended beyond the words he penned. His notable achievements include securing the esteemed Poetry Business New Poets prize in 2020 for his remarkable pamphlet, “Aunty Uncle Poems.” This achievement alone showcased his mastery of the written word and his ability to captivate readers with his verses.

Adding to his accolades, Mr. Odubanjo’s dedication to his craft earned him the Eric Gregory award from the Society of Authors and the esteemed Michael Marks pamphlet award. These recognitions affirmed his position as a promising and accomplished voice in the world of poetry.

Eager to expand his horizons, he pursued a journey of knowledge and creativity by embarking on a PhD in creative writing at the University of Hertfordshire. Prior to this endeavour, he had also graced the halls of the University of East Anglia, where his passion for literary expression was nurtured and flourished.

As we reflect on his journey, let us remember not only the poet but also the scholar who invested in his growth and shared his wisdom with the literary landscape. Mr. Gboyega Odubanjo’s legacy is one that shall forever inspire fellow writers and artists to embrace their creativity and contribute their voices to the world.

While we grapple with the sudden loss of Gboyega Odubanjo, we find solace in the knowledge that his words and influence will forever remain woven into the fabric of our artistic community. May his journey inspire us to embrace our own creativity and share our stories with the world, just as he did.
