Twas The Day Of The New Year

Twas the day of the new year and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse.

The New Year’s Resolutions were already made
The bills from this past Christmas already paid.

My spouse was all comfy snuggled up in the bed
While snoring so loudly it really hurt my poor head.

When there in the kitchen while making my tea
I dropped the pot and it hit my knee.

Away to the bathroom I flew in a flash
Tore open a bandage then looked at the trash.

The light on the trash can made the tissues inside
Look a lot like that litter that you find roadside.

Then what in the world did my eyes both spy
But my sleep walking spouse yelling, “You surely must cry!”

With a bedhead hairdo and her nightgown all wet
I knew right then that I had lost last night’s bet.

I bet her a breakfast served right in the bed
That she would awaken and look great instead.

She raised up her arms and then she hollered
All her friends names as she unladylike slobbered.

So back to the bed and warm covers she went
To sleep more than usual and be content.

And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof
The sound of the snow sliding down with a poof.

My tea was forgotten and breakfast delayed
While I joined my dear spouse in the bed she had made.

I looked out the window at this year’s first snowfall
And then closed my eyes and said, “Happy New Year to all!”
