November Inside Shadows

The last several weeks I have been working on the present Art Challenge (Theme: The World Inside) by photographing shadows produced by sun coming in through south facing windows.

There are slatted blinds in the windows of our apartment and the plastic tassels and pull cords have provided the objects that block the sunlight producing the shadows.

The first image that I uploaded for Week 7 of the 52 week challenge was a photograph taken in the kitchen.  Shadows of the blind’s tassels and pull cords were cast onto the side of a wall cabinet.

Those tassels are at the end of each pull cord which operates whether the blind’s horizontal slats are open or closed.  A third pull cord and tassel out of sight in this view raises or lowers all slats of the blind.  All horizontal slats were raised and folded onto each other at the top of the window when this photo was taken.

Although the cabinet and window trim is white the late afternoon sun gave everything a golden, almost sepia tone and I decided to leave that color in the final image.

The second shadow image that I uploaded for Week 8 was a photograph that was taken in a bedroom. In this photograph the shadow of a single plastic tassel and pull cord shows up on a textured curtain.

The interplay of bright light coming in through the window against the dark colored curtains bearing even darker shadows was a study in contrast.

More contrast was evident in the textured material against the smooth finish on the wall leading to the window.

Finally, the vertical lines created by the pull cords are in contrast to the horizontal lines in the pattern of the curtain.

I decided to convert this photograph to black and white to accent the dramatic interplay of light and dark as well as the many contrasts contained in the image.

It’s been cloudy with very little if any sun casting shadows the last couple of days but cooler and clearer weather is forecast for next week. To find out if next week’s challenge image contains more shadow art stay tuned to KeppenArt.
