Alla prima oil painting is direct and intentional. It is usually done in one session – such as en plein air painting. Studio based oil studies, like in today’s video, are a great way to practice your alla prima technique ready for plein air painting.

This oil painting study was a practice piece in preparation for a larger painting of the same view. The amazing coastline of Cornwall is full of magnificent views and stunning light. I particularly love the morning light along the St Ives coastline. I am working on a new series of coastal paintings and drawings which I am very excited about.

I was using oils on newsprint paper (which will fade over time but it is only a practice painting!). I also mixed some linseed oil into the paint to help it flow as the paper absorbed the oil quite quickly.

The colours on my palette for this oil study were:
Warm White
Winsor Lemon
Lemon Yellow
Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Red
Magenta
Terra Rosa
Indian Red
Raw Sienna
Raw Umber
Violet
Ultramarine Blue
Manganese Blue
Lamp Black
