The Leash

There it was. Staring me in the face again.

Hanging on the doorknob ready to be hooked to a collar.
Ready to perform its duty of keeping a dog close to you as you walked.
A tool to make control of the dog easier.

Black.
Dull.
Utilitarian.

That leash hung on the door and haunted me. The dog long gone. The companionship. The snuggling up under the covers on a cold night. A tongue lovingly stroked along my arm. A wagging tail when I picked up that leash.

Gone. All of those things gone.

Except for that leash hanging on the doorknob.
