Marketing Tips for Facebook

In a world where social media has changed how businesses work today, a whole new opportunity has opened up to artists and photographers. We can now reach people we would never have been able to with just a click of the button. Facebook has largely dominated the social media world, and that is what I am going to be focusing on today! It can be extremely helpful to know how to reach, engage, and interact with people through your page! How to do that is exactly what you will find below!

Getting Started

The first step to reaching new people with your page is…setting up a page! It is very simple to do this. You can get started right here!

After completing those steps, make sure you have some content up before you start promoting your page. A good profile picture, helpful contact and bio information, and a few posts of your work are a must. Once you have all of this done, it is time to guide people to your page!

Using your Personal Profile to Promote Your Page

After you have created your page, the first thing you should do is invite your existing friends to like it! This will immediately generate action on your page and advertise it to their friends as well. It is extremely easy to do this. After navigating to your page, click the small dots on the bottom right of your cover photo. Click on “Invite Friends” on the drop down list and click away (image attached). Another great way to promote your posts is to share them on your personal page every once and a while. While this can be helpful, do not overuse it or people will start ignoring your posts when they see them. While it is certainly helpful to have a large number of personal friends, if you are just starting out on Facebook, do not fear. There are plenty of more tips to come!

A fantastic way to generate traffic to your page is via groups. Personally, I have joined around 50. Like the other tips in this article, it is very easy to find and join them. Simply search what you are looking for, read the rules, and post away. It is best to share photos straight from your page, but be sure to read the rules as some do not allow this. Almost any group can positively affect your page, but some starting suggestions would be local and nature groups!

Giveaways and Contests.

Once you have a following on your page, giveaways and contests are a great way to engage your followers and gain new ones in the process. I personally love print giveaways. They do not cost me much but give a lot in return! Also, followers love them. It is a great way to give back to those who have supported you. A good way to reach others is to have your followers tag three friends, share the post, or like your page to be entered. It is a win-win for everyone!

Writing Effective Posts .

As you will soon find out, Facebook is very picky with what it puts out to your followers. It is crucial for your post to engage people, or it will hardly reach anyone. The more likes your post gets, the more followers it will send it out to. Out of the 4,000 people who have liked my page, some posts have reach only 200-300 of them due to their rather boring content. There are some major no-nos when writing a post. If you use keywords like buy, discount, code, etc. Facebook will send it out to less people. Steer clear of percentages and dollar signs unless it is an absolute key part. With your posts, shorter descriptions tend to do better than lengthy paragraphs, but make sure you are telling a story with each post. Keep your followers engaged and interested. Also, I find it best not to post more than one time a day. I tend to space mine out from around 2-3 days. If you stick to these simply rules, you will find your posts reaching more and more people!

Paying Facebook.

The classic saying “you put out what you put in” is most definitely true with Facebook. While following all of the above will certainly help you reach more people, there is no denying that paying Facebook to boost your posts will definitely help. There are many different ways to promote your posts via Facebook ads. It varies from page to page, so keep experimenting to find out what is best for you! When I pay for an ad, it is usually for likes on my page or for boosting posts that have keyword no-nos in them. If you are based in New York, it might be best to enter the location to just that city! Play around with who you target to to find out what gives you the best engagement!

Now that my page has reached a substantial amount of likes, I usually boost my posts to “People Who Like My Page and Friends.” This gives a personal connection in a news feed rather than a random add popping up.

Facebook can sometimes be frustrating, but in the end it most definitely pays off. Facebook has changed the way I approach my photography and has brought me connections I would never have been able to make before. By following these simple steps, you will be on your way to furthering your connections and expanding your business!
