During the Facebook outage on October 4th, 2021, I decided to take the enforced break from Facebook and make use of the extra time by experimenting with lighting techniques. I used simple props (a vent tube for an air conditioner and a bouncy ball) as the subjects for my still life. Using my phone's flashlight to highlight where the ball was in the tube, I took several shots, moving the light around each time. I then applied different filters while editing. This shot was not only the clearest shot I could get, but it was my favorite. Although a very simple piece, to me it is a depiction of life spiraling out of control, much as this ball is spiraling its way down the tube. In contrast, the coloring this filter gave the photo brings a sense of calm and peace to the picture. To me, it is a picture of my own anxieties. I focus on them (the light on the ball) forgetting that my life is, in actuality, relatively calm and peaceful.
