
{"id":607,"date":"2021-12-16T06:00:17","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T06:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourartsmagazine.com\/kathykmcclellan\/?p=607"},"modified":"2021-12-23T15:52:23","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T15:52:23","slug":"my-favorite-holiday-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourartsmagazine.com\/kathykmcclellan\/2021\/12\/16\/my-favorite-holiday-tradition\/","title":{"rendered":"My Favorite Holiday Tradition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-608\" src=\"https:\/\/ourartsmagazine.com\/kathykmcclellan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2019-12-22-14CrpClrtyOAM-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourartsmagazine.com\/kathykmcclellan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2019-12-22-14CrpClrtyOAM-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ourartsmagazine.com\/kathykmcclellan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2019-12-22-14CrpClrtyOAM-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/ourartsmagazine.com\/kathykmcclellan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/2019-12-22-14CrpClrtyOAM.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the third week in December.\u00a0 Christmas is almost a week away.\u00a0 It\u2019s cold outside.\u00a0 Freezing actually.\u00a0 Snow covers everything in sight except the highways that have been cleared.<\/p>\n<p>As children we can\u2019t wait for Daddy to get home from work around dusk.\u00a0 Tonight is the night he\u2019s promised to take us to see outdoor Christmas decorations.<\/p>\n<p>We are too excited about our annual outing to be hungry.\u00a0 But we aren\u2019t going anywhere until we sit down for the evening meal.<\/p>\n<p>After eating and helping to clean up the kitchen we grab our coats and head for the garage.\u00a0 Climbing into the family car we imagine how many roads we\u2019ll travel this evening.<\/p>\n<p>Every December my father would ask his co-workers who lived in the villages and small towns around us where the best outdoor decorations were located in their neighborhoods.\u00a0 As we drove the rural highways, pulling off the main roads into small communities, he would tell Mother which of his co-workers lived on that road.<\/p>\n<p>I never paid any attention to their conversations. My mind was too occupied with what I could see out of that back window.\u00a0 This was before blow up Santas and store bought wire skeletons covered with lights in the shape of reindeer or angels.<\/p>\n<p>There were occasional displays of lighted plywood pieces cut and painted as snowmen or angels but the majority of the decorations consisted of large colored bulbs strung along the roof lines and decorating outdoor evergreen trees in people\u2019s front yards.<\/p>\n<p>We grew up and moved away.\u00a0 But we tried to time our vacations to visit my parents at Christmas.\u00a0 By then Wheeling, WVA (driving distance from my parents\u2019 home) had started putting on a Festival Of Lights.\u00a0 There are lighted displays of all kinds on over 300 acres along the six mile drive through the park.
