Tips To Extend The Life Of Your Amplifier

Amplifiers can’t work without an amplifying device. In the past, vacuum tubes were used but today, transistor have replaced them. The good thing about transistors is that they are relatively inexpensive, durable and efficient. On the other hand, tube amplifiers are power-hungry devices. Plus, they are fragile and generate a lot of heat. If you have a tube-based amplifier, make sure you follow the steps given below to extend the life of it.

Tips to Extend the Tube Amplifier Life

After using the amplifier outside in winter, make sure it reaches room temperature before you turn it on. Turning it on when it is still cold may cause component failure.

Make sure your amp is sitting for away from liquids and beverage. Liquids can damage your device to the point where it won’t be possible to get it repaired without spending a lot of money.

Always use high-quality cables with your device. If any of the cable produces pops or crackles, replace it without wasting time. Shorts can cut down on the life of your sound system.

Be careful when connecting your unit to the speaker cabinet. Ideally, you may want to connect the cabinet first. You may want to follow the same principle when it comes to the signal lines.

Don’t use an improper load. Keep in mind that loading and impedance are important for any type of tube amplifier. The amplifier should have the right impedance based on the cabinets you are using. Mismatched loading may threaten the life of your amplifier.

It is not a good idea to move the unit around while it is switched on. Actually, the filaments and other components in the tube are more prone to damage when hot. Even a slight shock can cause the device to fail.

Before you Loadout, don’t forget to let the unit cool down.

When you need to you shut off the device, there is no need to use the standby mode. All you need to do it shut down the device.

Dropping the unit may cause a lot of damage to your amplifier. Therefore, make sure you keep shocks, drops, and bumps to a minimum. This is important even if the device is in a soft case.

When your amp is cold, you can use a blower to blow out the dust, debris, fur, and cobwebs. Besides, you can use a lint-free piece of clothing for wiping the tubes. Actually, dust and debris inside the unit may cause excessive heat.

Your amplifier should be stored in a controlled environment. Keeping the unit in a garage, shed or car will reduce its life significantly. Actually, keeping your speakers in these conditions may cause contact corrosion and surround rot. Also, it will add to the fragility of the paper cones.

In short, if you take care of tube amp, it will stand the test of time. Therefore, you may want to follow these basic steps to extend the life of your tube amplifiers.
