What is an artist?

again and again people ask and the answers are all the same.  You have the ‘artists are special’, brigade, you have artists are awesome.  You have artists do not obey rules.. blah blah blah

My answer is this.  and I am only going to give it once as I refuse to get involved in this conversation again…and again and again and again

A true artist for me is someone who loves drawing, painting, photographing, etc, etc, etc and just wants to do that, whether good, bad, skilled or naive. Their work comes from their heart and, is just what they want to do at odd times of the day, or the night, or during all of it sleepless. They have ups and downs, they work other jobs, or they do art as much as they can, as a job. They are lucky. They are unlucky. They have relationships. They are bad at relationships. They shop, cook or, have someone who does that for them. They lock themselves away and forget to eat in the midst of creating or, they are regimented and eat, drink and, remember to dress.

They smile. They laugh. They poo. They wee. They love and, some pray, and some do not.

They are what they are. Categorising people is like trying to catch wind with a net

To try says more about the person trying, and says what type of artist the questioner is.
